New
Asda Highbridge supermarket will create jobs boom in Burnham area

More
than 100 jobs are to be created when a huge new Asda supermarket
- twice the size of Burnham-On-Sea's existing Tesco store - opens
in Highbridge.
Planning
bosses have this week given outline planning permission to Asda
to build a 40,000 square foot store in Springfield Road on the
site of the old Woodberry Bros and Haines factory, pictured below.
The
Weekly News reports that building of the store, homes and car
park could begin as soon as Spring next year. It is expected that
the store could then open in the autumn or early in 2007.
The
scheme, being overseen by developer Derek Mead, also involves
more than 70 houses and apartments being built alongside 400 parking
spaces - but plans
to build a restuarant and petrol station at the site have been
shelved in order to free up more space for housing.
The
opening of the Asda store could be great news for shoppers in
the Burnham area with a price war certain to break out between
it, Tesco and Somerfield.
