BARB's
15th anniversary celebrations delayed during rescue drama

Fifteenth
anniversary celebrations at BARB, the Burnham-On-Sea charity behind
the town's two life-saving hovercrafts, had to be put on hold
when crewmembers were called out to rescue a girl stranded on
the mudflats.
BARB
was marking the occasion on Sunday (August 26th) with an open
day - attended by more than 500 people - when Coastguards called
the crew to Brean.
Once
the Spirit Of Lelaina hovercraft had returned from dealing with
the incident, the crewmembers
went ahead with a cake-cutting ceremony, led by BARB President
Neville Jones and BARB Chairman Mark Newman.
"Many
of the visitors thought we were performing a training exercise
and did not realise a real incident was underway," said BARB
Chairman Mark Newman. "They
got to see at first hand what happens during a call-out. Once
we'd returned to our station and the hovercraft had been washed
down, the cake-cutting ceremony went ahead about an hour later
than planned."
During
the day, visitors were able to see BARB's two hovercrafts up close,
hear about the charity's work and pick up beach safety advice.
They
were also able to help the charity by buying items from a new
range of BARB-branded merchandise, which includes pens and postcards.
