Council
chief executive welcomed at Burnham hovercraft group's AGM

Kerry
Rickards, the Chief Executive of Sedgemoor District Council, enjoyed
a flight in the Spirit Of Lelaina hovercraft on Friday (April
27th) before he attended the AGM of BARB, the life-saving rescue
charity, as its VIP guest.
Mr
Rickards - pictured above with BARB President Neville Jones (centre)
and Operations Manager Pete Emery (left) - was flown along the
beach to Burnham-On-Sea's Low Lighthouse before returning to the
seafront headquarters of BARB to meet its crew.
After
a brief visit to Burnham's Coastguard and RNLI stations, Mr Rickards
then attended BARB's AGM in the town council's chambers in Jaycroft
Road.
BARB's
Chairman Alan Miller confirmed that he was retiring from his position
after several busy years in the role.
He
was praised by Mr Jones as "a great tower of strength"
and described as a "hard act to follow" by new BARB
Chairman Mark Newman.
Honourary
life memberships were presented to Mr Miller (pictured centre)
and long-time crew member Simon Triggol.
Certificates
of appreciation were also awarded to several of BARB's biggest
supporters - the Western Daily Press and Diamond Farm's
Fundraising Group.
Treasurer
Mike Ross gave up an upbeat report on the state of BARB's finances,
and Senior Pilot Pete Charles followed with a round-up of a busy
year.
"We
can be very proud of our volunteer crew and the dedication they
continuously show," he said. "It is a privilege to serve
with them."
The
Heathcoat-Amory Telescope Award was presented to BARB's Secretary,
Roger Flower. The trophy is handed to the person who is deemed
to have contributed the most to the charity in the past 12 months,
and Roger said he was "honoured" to receive the accolade.
The
election of BARB's management committee followed and Mark Newman
was chosen as Chairman, with Dave Bailey becoming Vice Chairman,
Pete Emery as Operations Manager, Mike Ross as Treasurer and Roger
Flower as Secretary.
BARB
crew member Andy Croker was handed the annual 'Fanny Award', presented
to the person who in the view of the crew has done the silliest
thing over the past year.
