Brean Golf Club to be major sponsor of Burnham hovercraft during 2005

DELIGHTED Burnham-On-Sea hovercraft crew members are celebrating this week after Brean Golf Club announced it would become a major sponsor of the service during 2005.

The popular golf club, which raised thousands of pounds for charity last year, plans to hold a series of fundraising events during 2005, with Burnham's hovercraft being the main beneficiary.

Club captains Bob Masterman and Deirdre Wheadon visited the hovercraft station this week to meet the crew and discuss their planned activities during the spring and summer.

"We wanted to help a local group that would really value our support and quickly put the funds to good use," said Bob, the club's men’s captain.

"Burnham's hovercraft is therefore ideal – the crew do such a super job in providing an essential life-saving service along the Somerset coastline. We're delighted to be helping them over the coming year."

The first fundraising event will be a special Charity Golf Day on Friday, April 8 when more than a dozen teams of four players will compete in a day-long tournament.

As part of the arrangements, the hovercraft will also be on display at Brean Leisure Centre - next to the Golf Club - several times over the next few months when visitors will be able to see the craft up close and meet some of the crew.

BARB’s Press and Publicity Manager, Mark Newman, said: "We're very grateful to the club for their generous support. These funds will help a great deal with the high costs of purchasing and maintaining vital equipment for the hovercraft, and also funding our ongoing crew training programme."

The Burnham-On-Sea Hovercraft service costs more than £20,000 a year to run and is funded entirely by contributions from the public and local businesses. For this reason, the group is always seeking donations and sponsors.
