Mud rescue rehearsed by coastguard and hovercraft teams

Burnham's hovercraft and coastguard teams rehearsed a joint rescue of a casualty stuck in the notorious mud at Brean on Sunday March 6th.

Over 20 crew members from the two teams gathered on the beach - which last summer was the scene of many real incidents - to practise the rescue of a casualty.

The hovercraft flew out over the mud to help the Coastguard Mud Rescue Team bring a 'casualty' back to dry land.

Our photos show the craft out in the mud with the Mud Rescue team and, right, the hovercraft team being briefed prior to the exercise.

A similar second exercise is due to be held in 2-3 weeks time. It comes as Burnham's rescue services gear up for another busy summer. The hovercraft helped and rescued more than 50 people during 2004 - its first full year of operation.
