Somerset
emergency services gather in Burnham for ESCAPE 2006
Emergency
services from across Somerset are to hold a joint safety awareness
day in Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday August 19th, giving the public
an opportunity to find out more about their life-saving work and
to meet their crews.
ESCAPE,
the Emergency Services Community Awareness and Promotion Event,
will be held on Burnham seafront between 10am and 4pm and will
include a wide range of demonstrations and displays.
Fourteen
different emergency groups from across Somerset will be attending,
including HM Coastguard, Avon and Somerset Constabulary, Somerset
Fire and Rescue Service, St John Ambulance, the Burnham Hovercraft
and Burnham RNLI.
Other
groups participating will include Somerset Air Ambulance, Skywatch
rescue micro lights, Freewheelers Blood Bikes, Somerset 4x4 response,
Highways Agency Traffic Patrols, and Burnham lifeguards.
Vehicles
from each service will be on display and life-saving demonstrations
will be given in the sea, in the air and on the land, providing
spectators with a rare chance to see the crews' work close-up
during major incidents.
A
simulated sea rescue will be performed in Bridgwater Bay to show
the dangers of venturing out into fast flowing tidal estuaries
and six other demonstrations with the hovercraft, micro lights,
paramedics and Coastguards will be held throughout the day.
BARB,
the group that operates Burnham's rescue hovercraft, is organising
the event, having successfully launched it in 2004.
"This
year's event is even bigger than last year - we have more rescue
services involved, more crew members, and the event is being given
extra space along the seafront," said press officer Mark
Newman.
"It
will be a great opportunity to meet the rescue crews from our
local emergency services and see at first hand how they save lives
across Somerset. It should be an interesting, fun day for visitors
of all ages."
