special: Hovercraft pull raises funds for Burnham rescue charity

Burnham-On-Sea's
Spirit Of Lelaina rescue hovercraft was pulled through the streets
of Brean on Sunday (September 30th) when supporters raised thousands
of pounds for BARB, the charity behind the life-saving service.
A
hardy group of a dozen members of Chevron Country Music Club and
several BARB
suppporters took the strain to tug the hovercraft and its tow
truck for two miles through the resort.
Crowds
of country music fans who are in the village for its annual Country
Music Festival lined Coast Road in the centre of Brean to cheer
the fundraisers on and keep the collection tins rattling.
Starting
at Brightholme Holiday Park, the group made their way through
the centre of the resort, finishing at the Beachcomber Inn.
Organiser
Barbara Newman of the Chevron Country Music Club said the event
had been another big success.
"We
had a fantastic reception from a great many supporters and would
like to thank everyone who donated - BARB is an excellent cause
and when it's a local charity people often give more."
BARB's
Chairman, Mark Newman, presented Barbara with a certificate of
appreciation and thanked the group.
"We
are very grateful to Barbara and all the country fans who have
generously contributed to BARB again this year," he said.
"It was great to see so many people having a lot of fun today
whilst raising money."
The
final sum raised by the group will not be known for another week
as the fundraising drive continues throughout the Country Festival.
All
funds raised will go towards the £30,000 annual cost of
running and maintaining the group's two rescue hovercrafts and
training its crew.
