Coastline
searched launched after sighting of parachute

One
of Burnham-On-Sea's rescue hovercrafts joined Coastguards in searching
four miles of Somerset's coastline on Sunday morning (June 1st)
after reports that a canister and parachute had been spotted in
the skies above Burnham.
The
Spirit Of Lelaina hovercraft, operated by Burnham-based charity
BARB, was launched to search for the object on the mudflats.
Burnham
Coastguard officer Robin Hewlett said: "A concerned resident
in Burnham contacted police after spotting what appeared to have
been a canister and parachute floating from the sky in the direction
of Berrow."
The
Coastguard team searched the beach and sand dunes from Burnham
jetty to Berrow on foot and used The Spirit Of Lelaina to scour
the low tide line and mudflats.
BARB
Hovercraft Operations Manager Steve Perks said the operation was
scaled down at 11.30am.
"A
thorough search was carried out of several miles of coastline
but no trace of the object was found," he said.
