Burnham
inshore lifeboat called to help rescue injured swan
Burnham-On-Sea's
inshore lifeboat crew were back in action on Sunday afternoon
(January 14th) to help in the rescue of an injured swan on the
River Parrett at Pawlett.
The
bird had been reported in a distressed state to Highbridge-based
Secret World Wildlife Centre on Saturday and after several unsuccessful
attempts to capture it from the river bank, the group called BARB,
the charity that also operates Burnham's rescue hovercrafts, to
help.
BARB's
inshore lifeboat was driven by road to Pawlett where it was launched
with a crew of two onboard - Steve Perks and Morris Smith - assisted
by Secret World's Ellie West on the river bank.
The
bird, which had a suspected broken shoulder, was quickly captured
and returned to the bank where it was taken away by Secret World's
team for treatment.
BARB
has been involved in several animal rescues during the last three
years - including four other swans and the rescue of two dogs
stuck in thick mud at Brean in 2004.
A
spokesman said: "If distressed animals are not rescued, people
feel tempted to try and help them by venturing into the water
or mud, and thereby put their own lives at risk. Providing that
we're not jeopardizing the rescue of a person elsewhere, BARB
is always happy to help."
