BBC
Singers join Burnham and Highbridge pupils for special Wells concert
Schoolchildren
from Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge are to sing alongside the BBC
Singers and 240 other pupils from across Somerset during a special
concert in Wells Cathedral.
Children
from Berrow, Brent Knoll, East Huntspill, King Alfred, St John's
Highbridge, St Joseph's Burnham and West Huntspill will join with
the BBC Singers (pictured right) and players from the New London
Orchestra to perform the world premiere of the 'Waters of Time'
on Friday 24th February at 7:30pm in Wells Cathedral.
Sponsored
by Youth Music and Somerset Music, Somerset County Council's music
service, 'Waters of Time' was created by local composer Ronald
Corp to celebrate the history of Wells and the surrounding wetlands,
its people, places and events.
The
text by Marilyn Floyde has been beautifully researched and contains
fascinating detail about the traditions and culture of the region,
as well as its geographical features, its myths and legends.
There are over 20 separate pieces which will be sung by around
200 students from nearly 50 Somerset schools in conjunction with
the BBC Singers, accompanied by 40 instrumentalists from the New
London Orchestra as well as from Wells Cathedral School and the
County Youth Orchestra and Concert Band. The standard of performance
promises to be high.
"This
is a wonderful example of students coming together with others
from neighbouring schools and colleges," says Penny Dunscombe,
Somerset Music's Vocal Development Manager, who has been directing
the project.
"The
experience of working so closely with such a well-known composer,
and alongside professional singers and instrumentalists, before
giving the World Premiere in such a beautiful Cathedral, is one
that the participants will treasure for a very long time."
Tickets
are available at £7 each from the Somerset Music Office
on 01823 356660 or 01823 356619.
