Controversial
Berrow flats development gets go-ahead from local planners

A
40-name petition from worried residents has failed to stop district
planners giving the green light to controversial plans to build
an apartment block in Berrow, near Burnham-On-Sea.
Members
of Sedgemoor's Development Control Committee have given the go-ahead
to an application for eight one bedroom apartments along with
new parking facilities at 30 Barton Road, pictured above.
The
decision came despite a petition signed by 40 local residents
against the scheme and a further eight letters of objection.
They
argued that the development would lead to more traffic congestion
in the summer, increase the risk of flooding, affect sunlight
to nearby houses, and would not conform with other styles of building
in the area.
District councillor Charles Mason, pictured right, also backed
them, saying the development would lead to "unacceptable
increased use of access on a dangerous road."
But
Sedgemoor District Council planners gave the application the go-ahead
at this week's meeting after reviewing the application.
It
come after Berrow Parish Council said the scheme would fit in
well and would provide much-needed small accommodation in the
parish.
And
the County Council highways authority decided that while the new
site would lead to more traffic, it had no reason to object to
the plans.
The
applicant, Daniels Developments, also said that the block would
be designed to replicate two semi-detached properties that are
linked. The block would be lower than adjoining properties and
would be at least 20 metres from the main elevation of Rosetree
Farm, the adjoining listed building to the south.
The
existing detatched house will be demolished to make way for the
new building later this year.
