Rally 2007 Preview

Duncan
Holder
and Nick Reeves, pictured, are gearing up to defend their title
at the
2006 Brean Regency Stages Rally, to be held on January 28th-29th.
The
local duo, from Mark and Ilminster, raced away with the title
in 2005 and are optimistic of their chances this year.
Rally
enthusiasts from all over the country will gather for the
popular event at Brean Leisure Park, which this year marks its
10th anniversary.
The
top five provisional seeds for the event were announced on Thursday
(January 5th), with Duncan and Nick being in the number one spot
in their MG Metro 6R4.
Karl Broad and Trasie Moore (MG Metro 6R4) are at number two;
Steve and Yvonne Furzeland (Subaru Impreza WRC) are at three;
Dave Kynaston and Eli Sharpe (Audi A3 Quatro) are at four and
Steve
Winter (Subaru Impreza WRC) will start in position five.
Regency
Stages Rally organiser, Rod McKenna from Weston Motor Club, said:
"Duncan matched and beat his 2004 rally result to become
the first Weston Motor Club member to win a significant rally
in national terms for 20 years.
"His
rally title has had a tremendous positive impact on the Club and
we are very proud of what he has achieved. However, this year
with more than 80 top drivers from the South and South West of
England, including the previous year's rally winner Karl Broad,
competing in the 2006 event, the level of competition is of a
very high standard."
The
rally is the opening round of three major championships - the
Association South West, The Association Central Southern and the
Cotsworld Motorsports Group - and the organisers say this should
guarantee a high standard of entry.
Duncan,
43, who has been rallying since his was 17-years-old and a member
of Weston Motor Club for 25 years, is well renowned for rallying
in his trusty Rover 3500 Vitesse, which was formerly driven by
ex-works driver Tony Pond.
In
2004, Duncan swapped his Rover for a nippy Metro 6R4 and came
overall second in the rally. The following year, with rivals Karl
Broad and Peter Lloyd out of the picture, Duncan competed in the
same car to win the race.
Duncan
is a keen rally driver and enters four, single venue, tarmac events
each year. Nick has also been competing in the motor sport for
more than 20 years.
Rod
added: "The rally always attracts an interesting assortment
of cars and drivers and this year is no exception, with the entry
list including everything from Imprezas, Escorts, Peugeots, BMWs
and even a Mini.
"Drivers
to keep an eye out for this year include Exeter based David Kynaston
in his Audi A3 Quatro, who came four seconds behind rally winners
Duncan and Nick last year, Taunton-based Karl Broad in his Metro
6R4 and Steve Winter from Brent Knoll in his Impreza."
Sponsored
by Regency
Insurance Brokers and being organised by Weston Motor Club,
the two-day event features 12 special stages within the Park covering
50 miles.
During
the weekend there will also be trade stands, a static display
of rally and race cars, grand stand seating and live rally action
on big screen TV, plus other attractions including a flying display
on the Sunday by the 'Utterly Butterly' aerobatic wing walking
team.
Entry
to the Rally on Saturday opens at 9am with the race starting at
11am. On the Sunday it opens at 7.30am and the rally re-starts
at 9am. Car parking is £7 on Saturday and £10 on Sunday
and both days include a souvenir programme.
