An estimated 35,000 spectators lined the usually quiet evening streets to gaze and cheer the cavalcade of carts and costumes. Music swirled through the crowds as the 57th Highbridge and Burnham-On-Sea Carnival swung into action and proved the ancient tradition is popular with new generations.
Masqueraders walked their way along the roads ahead of the massive carnival club floats. Flying the flag for Highbridge and Burnham in the parade was Hillview Junior Carnival Club, with their eye-catching Robot Attack creation. They had raised £7,000 from hard work marshalling, running raffles and doing sponsored walks to build their dream. The Masqueraders
CC team from Meare, near Glastonbury, had to replace 800 of their creation's
24,000 light bulbs after Saturday's carnival at North Petherton because
of wear and tear.
Terence and Beryl Baker came from Birmingham with their daughter Jane to see Burnham's extravaganza - and said their home city had nothing to compare. "We
wouldn't miss it," Mr Baker, 65, told the Western Daily Press.
"As long as I can breathe and drive I will be down. If I couldn't
do that I would find someone to bring me down."

Somerset's
hugely popular winter carnival headed to the coast on November 8th as
the streets of Burnham-on-Sea came alive with a magical ocean of light
and colour. 
Near
the front of the procession a prized place was reserved for the Spirit
of Lelaina rescue hovercraft which came into service earlier in the
year to help keep the Somerset coastline safe.
People
came from near and far for the dazzling display.
