Burnham-On-Sea bus services branded "totally
unacceptable"
Bus
services in Burnham-On-Sea
are "totally unacceptable" and must be improved, transport
pressure group Transport 2000 claimed this week.
Speaking
at Monday's meeting of the Town Council, David Redgewell, a spokesman
for the national transport organisation, criticised First Group,
which operates buses across Somerset, for its "totally unacceptable"
operation in Burnham and Highbridge.
He
highlighted the evening bus service between Burnham and Weston
General Hospital as an example of a poorly served route.
Town
councillor Louise Parkin agreed, saying bus services "urgently"
need to be improved in the town.
"I
am in full agreement with David," she said. "With so
many new housing developments, we'll be needing bus services more
and more. Something needs to be done."
Council
leader Peter Clayton said: "The current situation is not
helping the elderly, or mums with children who need to get about.
It's a form of social exclusion."
Cllr
Morgan added that Somerset County Council should come to the assistance
of the town and improve the situation. But he added that as Burnham
and Highbridge are only mentioned twice in the Transport Plan,
he fears the towns are being overlooked.
The
council is to pursue the issue with the County Council and also
take it up with MP David Heathcoat-Amory.
