Search launched after red flare is spotted
over Bridgwater Bay
An
RAF helicopter joined Coastguards and two RNLI lifeboats from
Burnham-On-Sea in a search of several miles of Bridgwater Bay
on Wednesday night (November 1st) after several reports of a red
flare being spotted near Hinkley Point.
A
strip of coastline
between the power station and Lilstock, near Watchet, were searched
by the rescue teams.
An
RAF crew onboard Rescue 169 (pictured) was called in to perform
a search using thermal imaging night goggles, and the RNLI lifeboat
crews were tasked to conduct a search of both the sea and shoreline.
Coastguards
from Burnham-On-Sea and Watchet co-ordinated the 90-minute search,
which was closed off at around 10.45pm.
Burnham
Coastguard Station Officer Steve Bird told Burnham-On-Sea.com:
"At this time of the year it's possible that a firework could
have been mistaken for an emergency flare, but we always have
to take these sightings very seriously. Lives could be at risk."
