Awards handed to Burnham Coastguards after 14 years of service
Two
Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards who
are standing down after a combined 14 years of life-saving have
been presented with long service awards this week.
Ian
Stephens and George Tuttiett were handed glass tankards by Coastguard
Sector Manager Tristam Newey and Burnham Station Officer Steve
Bird on
Wednesday evening (April 2nd).
Ian,
42, is emigrating to Canada later this month and George, 50, has
stepped down to spend more time running his farm.
Each
have spent seven years working with HM Coastguard and both have
many lasting memories of the incidents they have attended.
For
Ian, it was being called out twice in 24 hours to rescue the same
tourist from mudflats at Brean and Weston in 2004.
"It was almost unvelievable that someone could get into difficulty
in the same way twice on two days running," recalled Ian.
George
was one of the Coastguard team who helped rescue a badly injured
man who broke both his legs in a fall at Brean Down Fort in 2004.
"Memories of that incident will stay with me with a long
time," he said.
Station
Officer Steve Bird said both men would be "greatly missed"
by the team.
