Coastguards
called to horses trapped in mud on Brean Beach
Two
horses had a lucky escape when they had to be pulled to safety
after getting stuck in treacherous mud on Brean Beach on Sunday
afternoon (May 7th).
Carol
Brown, from Malmesbury in Wiltshire, was walking two of her horses
along the sand near Brean Down at 1.30pm when a thin layer of
top sand gave way and both animals sank into the mud to the tops
of their legs.
"They
were both distressed and we had a real struggle on our hands with
the tide coming in," she said.
She
dialled 999 and the fire brigade initially responded, then called
Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards who were quickly on the scene.
Fortunately,
both animals were pulled free from the mud just before the rescue
services arrived and further action was not required.
"It
was a real heart-stopping moment," said Carole. "We'd
not walked the horses out very far when the beach just sank underneath
them. They were stuck fast in the mud and we were worried."
"I'm
so glad it all ended happily. Both the horses - Ben and Tiggy
- are very precious to us."
The
incident happened just a few hundred metres away from where a
Range Rover became trapped
during April.
