Trapped
horses freed from mud at Brean by Coastguards and fire crew

Two
horses trapped in treacherous mud on Brean beach were pulled free
by Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards and a fire crew on Friday afternoon
(August 11th).
The
animals had sunk to the top of their legs after running down the
beach when they had become spooked by a a rope snapping.
Both
riders, aged 19 and 22, from Swindon in Wiltshire, quickly alerted
emergency services and, within minutes, Coastguards from nearby
Burnham plus three fire crews and RSPCA inspectors were on scene
to launch a bid to try and pull the animals free. Click

Ropes
were attached to the animals and over the course of 30 minutes
they were hauled back to the safety of the dry sand.
"This
again highlights the very dangerous nature of the mud here,"
said Burnham-On-Sea Coastguard Officer Steve Bird.
"Once
people or animals step off the hard sand into the mud they can
quickly get into trouble."
"Coastguards
from Burnham and the Special Rescue Unit from Bridgwater worked
very closely together today to ensure a happy ending."
It
is not the first time that horses have become trapped in the mud.
Earlier this year, two animals were briefly trapped in the same
location.
