Coastguard
search for 'missing swimmer' called off in River Axe

Coastguards
called off a search of the banks of the River Axe on Wednesday
afternoon (August 9th) after no trace was found of a man believed
to have been spotted trying to swim across the estuary on Tuesday
evening.
Coastguards
from Weston and Burnham searched both sides of the river near
Brean Down on Wednesday, but no sign of the person was found.
The incident has now been scaled down.
Members
of the public who were onboard a boat in the estuary on Tuesday
evening said they had warned a person in the water not to attempt
to cross the river. And, minutes later, shouts for help were heard
although no swimmer was seen.
Coastguards
from Burnham-On-Sea were alerted and two lifeboats from Weston
rushed to the scene to conduct a full search of the area.
An
RAF helicopter from Chivenor in Devon was also drafted in to carry
out sweeps of the bay and the northern side of Brean Down using
infra-red imaging equipment.
Police
confirmed on Wednesday that they had not received any reports
of missing persons in the area.
