Coastguards issue safety warning to wave dodgers
Burnham-On-Sea
Coastguards have warned youngsters who 'play chicken' with big
storm waves that they are putting their lives in danger.
The
stark warning comes after several children were issued with safety
warnings on Thursday evening (May 17th) after
being spotted by Coastguards dodging in and out of heavy surf
in Burnham, as shown in these photos and online
video.
Strong
winds had whipped up heavy waves which, combined with this week's
high tides in the Bristol Channel, made for dangerous conditions.
"The
children were clearly seen running in and out of the waves during
very windy and rough conditions," Burnham Coastguard station
officer Steve Bird told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
"They
need to know that they are potentially putting themselves in a
great deal of danger. We
would always advise people to be careful and stay away from the
sea in rough conditions."
Coastguards
issued the youngsters with safety warnings after being called
to the Northern Esplanade at 7.30pm.
