Our Nursery is contained within the Corner House which dates back to the late 1800s. Two complete floors of the property have been converted for the nursery, containing seven rooms.

Julia leads the team of highly qualified staff at Playaway Day Nursery and she is also the owner/manager. She completed her training at Norland Nursery Training College and she is also qualified as an Assessor and Internal Verifier in Early Years care & Education. She also holds a first class (Hons) degree in Early Years.

We have 10 members of staff who are all qualified and have experience. They also undergo regular training to keep up to date with current changes in childcare and development.

We provide a high standard of childcare and a stimulating environment for children aged from 3 months to 5 years with the emphasis on making learning fun. Our registration with Ofsted allows us up to 33 children at any one time. Our recent outstanding Ofsted report is available on request, or can be viewed online.

The Nursery is open from 7.30am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday. We charge on an hourly basis. A minimum stay is three hours. We are closed for bank holidays. Please note that Playaway is closed for one week between Christmas and New Year.

We know that for both children and parents it is an exciting and emotional time starting at a Nursery. Parents and staff together plan the entry of individual children to help them settle in as happily and as quickly as possible and to give parents confidence that their child will be happy without them.

We will offer you the opportunity of a home visit with myself and your key person. This provides an opportunity for your child to meet us in their own environment. After that you will then be invited in for a series of ‘settling in’ visits. Initially we will ask you to stay but once we are confident your child will not become distressed, we will ask you to slowly leave them to build up time away from you gradually until we and you feel they are ready to start.

The Nursery is based on a family structure with a key person responsible for the care of children in mixed age groups. This allows children to play and learn from each other, with the older children helping younger ones to develop and progress just like they would at home.

Each child has access to their key person at all times and the family comes together at special moments in the day for small group activities and meal times.

The nursery offers a free flow system which gives children the freedom to move around the different areas of the nursery at their own free will, allowing them to develop their own interests which can then be built on and encouraged by their key person.

Baby & Toddler Suite
The baby and toddler suite at Playaway comprises of two rooms for the babies to free flow between. A quiet and tranquil room and a sensory room where the Reggio and infinity mirrors, sand and water enable children to explore and find their feet.

It is a rich learning environment with appropriate learning activities helping to develop different skills.

Each Key person spends a lot of one to one cuddle time where each sound and movement is met with a warm smile, a kind word, and touch that lets the child know that they are special.

Two to Four year old Suite
Comprising of four rooms, the suite consists of:

Creative room - a workshop of play to cut, stick, paint, glue and present.

Technology room – for computers, cameras, walkie talkies and a snuggling sofa for reading.

Reflections room – with a Reggio mirror, light tables and building materials. Universally popular for imaginative and creative construction.

Imagination room – dressing up, role play and kitchen where imagination holds no bounds.

The two-four suite is an ‘Aladdins’ cave’ of fun, enjoyment and learning . Throughout the day the children can make self-directed and guided choices, participate in planned activities with small groups, join in key family times to discuss their day and share in others explorations and conversations.

Outdoor Play

We are passionate about outdoor play. At Playaway, children can still go exploring, build dens, fight dragons and save the world.

In the Playaway garden, children can build sand castles, leap off a ‘make believe’ tower, go to the shops on the bikes, have friends around the playhouse or pretend the willow den is a teepee.

The Playaway ‘Great Outdoors’ has just got bigger and is an all year round space. We have recently constructed an indoor beach area so whatever the weather or time of year, sandcastles, mountains and tunnels can be built safely from the wind and the rain.

Many children enjoy growing fruit and vegetables in our allotment which we then give to our resident chef to prepare for mealtimes.

Our own in-house chef prepares freshly made, nutritionally balanced meals on a daily basis. Meals are available at the Nursery for parents to view at the start of each week. The Nursery promotes free choice, encouraging the children to experience a diverse range of tastes and flavours. We will of course discuss any dietry requirements with you.
