Hinkley comprises two nuclear power stations - Hinkley A, an early Magnox reactor that was built in the 1960s and is now out of service and being dismantled - and Hinkley B which is still very much in service with 540 staff. While Hinkley has a good safety record, some local people remain suspicious about the health risks of nuclear power and there's concern about the long time it will take to decommission the original reactor and deal with its waste. The B station has a Talks Service that visits local schools and organisations to give presentations on energy and nuclear power in particular. Site tours can also be requested by organised groups, although there are a limited number of requests that can be accommodated. There is a nature trail adjacent to the power stations with useful work sheets for children as well as regularly organised events, such as wildlife walks hosted by the Nature Reserve Warden.
