Large flock of Little Egrets spotted near Burnham-On-Sea

A large flock of 20 Little Egrets spotted on Stert Island, opposite Burnham-On-Sea, delighted bird watchers on Saturday (April 21st).

Greg Dye-Hodge Beardsley, right, took the photo above of one of the birds wading in the mud on the island.

"I was amazed to see that our small colony of some six or so Little Egrets has dramatically risen to over 20. It was a wonderful sight," Greg told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

The Little Egret is a member of the Heron and Bittern family has a white plumage with plumes on its crest, chest and back.

Increasing numbers of the birds have been seen in our area during recent years, but this flock is one of the largest recorded sightings. The birds feed on a diet of fish and has colonised the UK in recent years from Spain and France.
