MP visits worried Highbridge traders
Burnham-On-Sea's
MP David Heathcoat-Amory visited worried traders in Highbridge
on Saturday morning (April 21st) as the campaign to get the town's
Walrow railway bridge re-opened was stepped up.
Burnham-On-Sea.com
exclusively broke
the news in March that the busy rail bridge in the heart of
Highbridge would close for three to four years until Network Rail
completes work to strengthen the structure.
One
of the area's biggest-ever petitions was organised by traders
and residents in order to encourage Network Rail to bring forward
its work. Over 1,000 signatures have now been collected on the
petition, which is going to rail bosses.
Mr
Heathcoat-Amory discussed the controversial closure with worried
traders during Saturday's visit to the town, hearing their stories
about a downturn in trade and their concerns for their businesses.
He
visited Highbridge DIY, Masie's Bakery and Smarts Newsagents in
addition to meeting other traders and local residents.
Mr
Heathcoat-Amory is pressing Network Rail and Somerset County Council
to find a solution and bring forward the date for the work to
be completed.
