Armed police swoop on Burnham-On-Sea street during disturbance

Abingdon Street in the centre of Burnham-On-SeaArmed police sealed off a Burnham-On-Sea road on Christmas Day afternoon as they investigated a serious disturbance at a flat.

Abingdon Street in the centre of Burnham was closed from around 4.30pm when residents told Burnham-On-Sea.com they saw officers surrounding one of the shops pictured here.

Eyewitness Nick Whetstone told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "There was apparently one male who had some sort of weapon. There was also a female in a flat over one of the shops, who was possibly being held hostage or being threatened."

"At one stage, the man concerned was seen on the roof of the flat."

"Residents were either kept indoors, or refused permission to return to their homes."

He added that several policemen were seen carrying semi-automatic firearms during the incident.

He added: "There was also a Staffordshire bull terrier that had been tied up outside, apparently to deter police from entering. After the end of the siege, another youth came along and took the dog away."

The incident lasted until around 6pm when the road was re-opened.

More information is expected to be released by Burnham-On-Sea police on Tuesday (December 26th).
