A new plastic bag recycling service has this week been launched at Burnham and Highbridge’s Household Waste Recycling Centre.

The introduction of plastic bag recycling wheeled bins at the Isleport centre follows the recent introduction of household battery recycling bins, allowing the public to recycle even more of their household waste.

County Councillor Hazel Prior-Sankey, who is portfolio holder for Transport and Waste, said: “The best way to deal with plastic bags is to not accept them in the first place.”

“You can either re-use the old ones, or take a sturdy bag of your own when you go shopping. We realise that there will be times when people use plastic bags, and now they have the ability to recycle them rather than throwing them away.”

Rufus Ford from the Somerset Waste Action Programme is pictured with one of the new plastic bag recycling bins.
