Over
100 athletes take part in 2006 Burnham-On-Sea Aquathon

More
than 100 athletes from across the South West took part in the
gruelling 2006 Burnham-On-Sea Aquathon on Sunday morning, April
9th.
The
event was split into two races with the shorter one consisting
of a 500m swim and 5km run, while the longer course comprised
a 1,000m swim and 10km run.
Both
events started at Burnham-On-Sea's swimming pool and included
a run along the sand to Berrow Golf Course, with the finish being
on the beach at the northern end of The Esplanade.
The
10km men's event was won by Julian Hatcher of the AVS Tri (pictured
at the top of this page) in a fast time of 52:24 while the 5km
men's event was won by Matt Freeman from local team West Country
Tri in 30:25.
The
ladies winners were Helen Parkinson from South Devon (10km) in
a time of 58:02 and Linda O'Connor (5km) from West Country Tri
in 32:01.
Organiser
Martin Rogers told Burnham-On-Sea.com said the event had run smoothly.
"It's been a great day of racing with a real friendly atmosphere."
"The
conditions were good and it proved to be an excellent warm-up
for the Burnham triathlon on June 11th."
He
added that entries for the 2006 Burnham triathlon have now closed,
with 320 entrants due to compete in the popular summer event.
The
winners (pictured at the bottom of this page) in the 10km event
were: 1st Julian Hatcher, 2nd Iain Hindes and 3rd Chris Stuart.
The men's 15-39 age category was won by Jason Emmett, while the
40-49 age category was won by Philip Whaites, and the 50-59 age
category by Bob Porter.
The
ladies winners in the 10km event were: 1st Helen Parkinson, 2nd
Yvonne Cox and 3rd Sarah Hobbs. In the 15-39 age category Helen
Gorton won, while the 40+ age category was clinched by Jean Bailey.
In
the shorter 5km race, the men's results were: 1st Matt Freeman,
2nd David Ambrose and 3rd Nicholas Tomkinson-Hill. The men's 15-39
age category was won by Robert Whaites, while the 40-49 age category
was won by Pete Hicks, and the 50-59 age category by Malcolm Hector.
The
ladies winners in the 5km event were: 1st Linda O'Connor, 2nd
Julia Hector and 3rd Jane Cooley. In the 15-39 age category kira
Thorpe won, while the 40-49 age category was clinched by Shayne
Ellison, and the 50+ category by Geraldine Broadley.
