Councillors’ anger over blocking of Highbridge pavements

-

Angry councillors have this week hit out at motorists who are blocking pavements in the centre of Highbridge.

At Monday’s meeting of Burnham and Highbridge Town Council, members said the problem in front of new homes in Church Street is “getting out of control.”

Members were told that Somerset County Council’s Transport Development department have agreed with developers at the site to install a full height kerb instead of the current shallow kerbs – and that trees are to be planted in the area.

But councillors are demanding a quick solution. Town councillor Pat Burge said the problem is “almost out of control”, adding that “cars have this week even been parked on the opposite side of the street as well – slowing the flow of traffic along Church Street.”

And Cllr Morgan told the meeting: “The pavement is becoming practically useless. This is a straightforward obstruction. I’d like to see the police getting involved and moving the vehicles.”

Cllr Neville Jones agreed, saying “there is something blatantly very wrong for the problem to have continued as long as it has.”

It had been proposed that bollards be introduced along the pavement, but SCC is against the plan for safety reasons. The town clerk is to approach the county council to press for quick changes.

Local residents, however, say better parking facilities should be provided in the town in order to help them.
