First
High Street farmers
market in
Burnham-On-Sea is cancelled
Burnham-On-Sea's first farmers market to be held in the town's
High Street was cancelled this week after an eleventh hour hitch.
The
April farmers market was to be the first to be held away from
the Princess Hall and Swimming Pool Car Park.
Months
of planning and discussions have been held between traders, police
and organisers in the run-up to the event.
But
Town Centre Manager Anne-Marie Spalding (pictured below) told
Burnham-On-Sea.com that a "last minute problem" had
forced it to be cancelled.
"We
hoped it would all come together in time," she said. "The
market was never fully confirmed to start in April, although we
had hoped that it would."
"We had permission from the police for the road closure and
everything was in place, but the group behind the market was unable
to provide us with stalls on the day and we had no choice but
to call it off."
She
added: "It was disappointing, but I'm hopeful we can go ahead
with the May market in the High Street instead."
"It
may have to move from the third Friday of the month to the fourth,
but we'll confirm the final details nearer the time."
She
added: "The traders were not lined up. It is down to the
farmers market to organise themselves and their stalls, which
is where it all went wrong."
"The
'group behind the market' are the farmers market organisers, a
commercial organisation, and not one which I am in charge of and
can only assist with facilitation. It is their decision whether
events go ahead or not."
Mrs
Spadling also confirmed that plans for Burnham's first continental
market are on track and that the event is scheduled to take place
on the town's seafront during July.
