Hundreds
of runners pounded the streets of Burnham-On-Sea on Sunday (October
1st) as they competed in the town's annual half marathon.
Despite
heavy rain earlier in the day, the weather held off at the start
of the race, pictured above, and despite some heavy showers these
did not hamper the competitors.
Organiser
Brian Beale told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "The day went very well
- we had over 330 runners, which was up on last year, and only
one person pulled out because of the weather."
The
event was won by 36-year-old Paul Wilson of Clevedon (pictured
below) in a time of 1 hour, 12 minutes and 55 seconds. He told
Burnham-On-Sea.com he was "delighted" to have won with
a two and a half minute lead over the second person home. Watch
the full interview on video.
First
lady home was Karen Hazlitt, 39, from Winchester who is competing
in a few weeks time in the Amsterdam Marathon.
The
run started at the BASC ground, then the runners ran along Love
Lane and Queens Drive, before turning left along the A38 towards
Brent Knoll and on to East Brent, Lympsham, Wick Road and Red
Road, before returning to Burnham via Berrow Road.
For
those that don't want to go the full 13 mile distance, there was
also a one mile fun run.
This
year's event was organised solely by local running club, the Burnham-On-Sea
Harriers.
The
Burnham-On-Sea Half Marathon was held last year for the first
time in 12 years and started at 11am from the BASC ground. Last
year's event was won by 21-year-old Peter Grist of Frome in a
time of 1 hour, 12 minutes and 33 seconds.
