Agency issues high tide advice to Burnham residents
The
Environment Agency is asking Burnham, Brean and Berrow residents
to be aware that high tides in September could bring an increased
risk of flooding.
Coastal
towns and villages could be at risk from the extreme high tides
if they coincide with stormy weather.
The
tides are expected on September 8th, 9th and 10th, then on 7th
and 10th October.
But
the Environment Agency says there is no need for too much concern
as flood defences currently in place are sufficient to cope. Spokesman
Mike Dunning told Burnham-On-Sea.com there would only be problems
if the tides coincided with severe weather conditions.
"The
tides should not cause any problems unless coupled with storm
surges and severe weather conditions," he said.
The
tides are expected to be about 4cm higher than normal for the
time of year, but reports in the national press earlier this week
claimed there was an increased potential for major flooding around
the Bristol Channel.
