Call for entries for 2006 Burnham-On-Sea Horticultural Show

-

Gardeners, growers, handicraft hobbyists, cooks and amateur photographers alike are being invited to take part in Burnham-On-Sea & District Horticultural Society’s 39th annual show which is set to take place in August.

The event will be held at Sanders Garden World on Saturday August 12th and Sunday August 13th.

There are 10 sections and 129 classes to be entered with 24 cups, five shields, two medals, one trophy, one tankard and one rose bowl to be won.

The Society’s Treasurer, Les Wallis, explained: “We’re expecting a good turn out in all sections and classes, but are still keen to make sure as many people as possible get involved with the show and ensure it is a great success.”

“The Society is always keen to hear from people who would like to get involved and to join us. We are delighted we’ve been able to hold our 39th annual show at Sanders Garden World as it’s an easily accessible location and the number of customers it attracts will hopefully help us reach many more potential new members and a much wider audience.”

The sections in which competitors are invited to enter include floral art, junior, domestic, handicraft, amateur photography, pot plants, flowers, wines, fruit and vegetables.

Classes include floral displays using the themes of ‘Entertainment’ and ‘Harvest Time’ for children aged up to 16-years-old to enter vegetable animals and handicrafts, and the opportunity for the area’s cooks to serve up Victoria sponges, cheese straws and chutneys to tickle the judges’ taste buds.

Visitors to the show will also be able to see entries of hand knitted soft toys, cushion covers, painting, photographs and homemade wine.

Entrants in the Burnham Allotment Society sponsored classes will be showing off what they hope will be the heaviest home-grown onions and potatoes in the area, and the longest runner beans.

The show is open to the public on Saturday August 12th from 1pm until 6pm and on Sunday August 13th from 10am until 4pm. The prize-giving and awards presentation ceremony will be held at 3pm on the Sunday. Admission to the event is free.

Details on how to enter, fees and a complete list of classes can be obtained from the Annual Show Secretary, David Bryant, who also works at the garden centre, on 01278 761111.
