Illuminated procession of boats starts 2006 Burnham Sailing Regatta
An
illuminated night-time procession of boats began the 2006 Burnham-On-Sea
Sailing Club Regatta on Friday night (June 30th).
Onlookers
lined the town's seafront to watch a procession of 22 illuminated
boats, which left the town's pontoon in the River Brue at 10pm
before moving into Bridgwater Bay and past Burnham.
"Every
boat was lit up, with anything from candle lanterns to outdoor
fairy lights - it was an incredible sight," said Sailing
Club Commodore Terry Moule.
Several
hundred people flocked to the seafront to watch the spectacle,
which looks set to become an annual event after this year's success.
The
regatta continues on Saturday (July 1st) with the main yacht races
of the weekend between 9.30am and 1pm.
Then
Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Eric Gill will officially open the
club's recently extended pontoons at 2pm and a tug-of-war will
be held at 4.30pm between the RNLI, BARB, Sailing Club and other
groups. On Sunday (2nd July) further yacht races will be held
between 11am and 2pm, followed by a barbecue. A prize-giving ceremony
will be led by the Mayor at around 3.30pm.
