Burnham-On-Sea’s Mayor and Town Crier were among more than 100 local residents to give a warm welcome to a group of Kenyan schoolchildren on Thursday night (October 5th).

The 24 pupils, who are from a primary school near Mombasa, are visiting Burnham-On-Sea and other towns in Sedgemoor to help raise money for a new orphanage in their home village. On Thursday they performed an impressive line-up of African songs and music in front of a large audience at Burnham’s Princess Hall.

Town Mayor Eric Gill told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I hope they enjoy their time here as much as the pleasure they have given us with their wonderful performance tonight. Burnham is very happy to welcome and help them.”

The Samson Chivatsi African Children’s Appeal was established in 1998 to give the poorest children in Kenya access to a good education. Sue Stevens, the Southern Representative for the charity who is based in Burnham, was at Thursday night’s concert in the town along with local councillors, business people and residents.

The charity is now hoping to raise enough money to build an orphanage near to the primary school. The children, aged between eight and 15 years, are performing across the UK for two months before going back to Utange near Mombasa in Kenya.
