M5 traffic at Burnham-On-Sea slowed to a crawl after accident

-

Christmas traffic on the M5 motorway near Burnham-On-Sea was reduced to a crawl on Friday afternoon (December 22nd) after an accident in thick fog.

Police and two fire crews from Burnham and Weston were called to the crash at 3.15pm near junction 22 of the northbound carriageway amid fears that two people were trapped inside a vehicle.

However, Burnham Station Manager Ian Hazelton told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Fortunately, both people managed to escape from the vehicle – a 4×4 – just before we arrived. They’d suffered only minor injuries.”

He added that the vehicle had left the main carriageway and collided with the barrier at the edge of the hard shoulder.

Thick fog was restricting visibility on the motorway at the time of the accident.
