Seafront
move for O2 mobile phone mast in Burnham is turned down
An
application by phone operator O2 to move its controversial phone
mast onto Burnham-On-Sea's seafront has this week been turned
down by district planners.
Sedgemoor
planners gave the proposal the thumbs down at a meeting on Tuesday
(May 30th), leaving a new location for the mast undecided.
O2
is under pressure to move the structure from Marine Drive, pictured,
to a new location after being served with an enforcement order
earlier this year following the end of a six-month trial period
at the location.
The
mobile phone giant submitted an application to move the mast to
the Marine Rescue Centre on the seafront - but nearby residents
objected.
Speaking
to Burnham-On-Sea.com, Sedgemoor's Senior Planning Officer Colin
Arnold said: "The decision on whether to enforce the removal
of the mast now rests with the Planning Inspectorate and the Secretary
Of State."
He
added that O2 may now look to apply to move the mast to the Yacht
Club at the southern end of the Esplanade instead - or further
along Marine Drive to the rear of the Somerfield supermarket.
The
mast was introduced onto Marine Drive last autumn after the structure
at Pepperal Road in Highbridge was removed, leaving the town with
poor quality mobile phone coverage and hampering communications
for marine rescue teams.
