Burnham-On-Sea police launch seafront speeding crack down

Burnham-On-Sea
police launched a major operation to crack down on speeding motorists
along the town's seafront on Thursday night (September 28th).
In
an operation lasting the whole evening, eleven vehicles were taken
off the road and five fixed penalty notices were issued along
The Esplanade, as pictured.
Neighbourhood
Beat Manager Martin Childs told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "It was
an extremely productive evening, which we will be repeating on
a regular basis."
"Eleven
prohibition orders were issued to the owners of cars and mopeds
that were in such a state that they needed to be taken off the
road."
"Furthermore,
five fixed penalty notices were issued - four for speeding - and
a Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme warning was placed on one
motorist. We also issued a warning under section 59 of the Police
Reform Act for careless driving."
He
added that moped drivers had been particularly targeted. "Owners
of mopeds who are 16-years-old must restrict their moped's speed
to a maximum of 30mph."
"This
is performed by modifying a cone in the exhaust, but many of the
owners we stopped had actually not made the change and therefore
are able to drive faster than the law requires."
"This
makes the mopeds unlicensed and invalidates their insurance, so
this is an extremely serious offence that is putting drivers and
pedestrians at risk."
Police
are planning further crack downs on speeding motorists in the
town in coming weeks to keep up the pressure.
"It
should be comforting for Burnham residents and others who use
the seafront that we are insisting on good driving standards,"
said Mr Childs.
