MP
backs calls
for Burnham-On-Sea seafront
traffic calming scheme
Burnham-On-Sea's
MP has hit out at Somerset County Council for refusing to provide
traffic-calming measures along the town's seafront.
David
Heathcoat-Amory criticised the County Council for
saying it would not giving any cash to tackle the problem of anti-social
driving.
Mr Heathcoat-Amory said: "This is exactly the sort of anti-social
behaviour we should be targeting, particularly in the summer months."
"This
is not only a road safety problem, but also threatens the heart
of the tourist industry."
"The
council tax increase by the County Council is the highest of any
council this year. So
it is strange that they have nothing to spend on the aspect of
road safety."
Burnham-On-Sea.com
reported last week how County Highways
boss Tony Shire had angered town
councillors by saying he would not meet them to discuss
the issue or explain his decision.
