Seven middle managers at Burnham-On-Sea’s Somerfield supermarket have been laid off this week as part of a nationwide cost-cutting move.

The supermarket giant confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com on Tuesday (October 17th) that seven people have been made redundant in the last few days.

Spokesman Pete Williams said: “We are in the process of restructuring our stores across the UK and have laid off seven middle managers at our Burnham-On-Sea store.”

“We are increasing our customer-facing roles, rather than managers, and will be taking on ten new staff at this store in the coming weeks.”

The spokesman also quashed rumours circulating around Burnham that the seafront store could soon close.

“That is definitely not an option. We are very much committed to Burnham-On-Sea,” he said.

“Burnham is a good trading store for us and there are no plans to close it.”
