Few
places remain for Burnham-On-Sea's annual Stert Island Swim
A
few places remain for swimmers wanting to take part in this year's
Stert Island Swim, which is being held this year on Sunday 30th
July.
The
swim starts at 10am and the swimmers enter the water to the left
of the jetty at the top of Pier Street in Burnham-On-Sea.
It
takes the swimmers between 23 and 60 minutes to complete the course.
Swimmers
should be aware that the race takes place in a tidal estuary so
the challenge is not so much the distance, but the water conditions,
which include tricky currents, cold water and the nearly nil visibility
that the swimmers have to brave.
Participants
should be over 18 years old and confident in their ability in
open water. Full first aid and rescue facilities are provided.
Entries
are limited to 80 and the closing date is Monday 24 July. No entries
will be accepted on the day, so contact Sedgemoor District Council
now to secure your place in this special 2,400-metre sea swim
race, unique to Burnham-on-Sea. Entry fees are £7.50 and
all participants receive a goody bag and commemorative gift.
The
event is also very popular with spectators and over 3,000 people
are expected to line Burnham Esplanade and Beach to watch and
cheer on the adventurous swimmers. There will be a wide selection
of craft and charity stalls on the Esplanade between 9.30am and
4.00pm.
General
enquires/entries for the swim should contact Linda Krause-Davies
on 01278 435765 or email events@sedgemoor.gov.uk
