Asda's
bid for 24-hour alcohol sales turned down by Burnham councillors
Highbridge's
soon-to-open Asda supermarket will not be able to sell alcohol
24 hours a day after local councillors debated the matter this
week.
Members
of the Burnham and Highbridge Planning Applications Committee
considered a licensing application by the supermarket giant to
permit the sale of "alcohol and late night refreshments"
24 hours a day.
But
councillors turned it down, with a spokesman explaining to Burnham-On-Sea.com:
"As the premises are in a residential area, we consider the
24 hour licensing inappropriate and would suggest that the licence
should allow the sale of alcohol between the hours of 6am and
11pm."
"Members
are aware that this happens in other stores of this size and nature,
even when the opening hours of the store are 24 hours."
Meanwhile,
building work is nearing completion at the store, as pictured
here, with the distinctive green Asda sign being installed on
the store's frontage this week.
Work
on the car park has also been completed, with white lines in place
to mark out hundreds of spaces. The store is due to open its doors
to customers on Monday November 5th.
