New
Burnham-On-Sea Children's Centre gets the go-ahead
Parents
and young children in Burnham-On-Sea are set to benefit from a
new Childrens Centre after the County Council announced
on Tuesday (August 14th) that it had secured planning permission
to build the new facility in the town.
The
Childrens Centre will be built on land next to The Community
Infants School in Winchester Road (pictured) and will provide
a central location for parents with children aged under five to
access a variety of services.
There will be full day care and early education for children,
including those with special educational needs. It will also provide
support for parents and families including health advice and links
with Jobcentre Plus.
Somerset
County Council will be co-ordinating the building work which is
due to commence in the autumn this year and then open by April
2008.
Burnham
North's County Councillor, Michael Facey, told Burnham-On-Sea.com:
"To finally receive planning permission is a great result.
Somerset County Council and the steering group has worked hard
to ensure this much needed facility is available for the residents
of Sedgemoor. The centre will provide a wide range of affordable
services to help support parents and children."
Councillor
Pauline Clarke, Somerset County Councils Portfolio Holder
for Childrens Services, added: "Somerset County Council
is delighted to help build the new Childrens Centre. It
will help support parents and provide them with affordable and
quality childcare. Somerset County Council wants to ensure that
all children in Somerset get the best possible start in life."
There
were concerns last
year that the location of the building could be a sticking
point due to its potential impact on nearby playing fields.
The
building was originally proposed for the centre of Burnham but
was moved to this site bordering Winchester Road as it provided
more space.
