Big
crowds flocked into Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday (November 24th)
for the town's annual Christmas lights switch-on.
BBC
Points West reporter Clinton Rogers and Mayor Pauline Pollard
flipped the switch at 4pm to light up the town for the festive
period.
An
all-day Christmas market of almost 20 market stalls lining the
town's High Street from 11am. And Burnham and Highbridge's town
band got the afternoon off to a stirring start with a range of
festive tunes, followed by a special performance of Christmas
songs and carols by Burnham drama group Curtain Call (pictured
below).
Local
opera singer Tim Pitman then took to the stage outside GW Hurleys
to entertain the crowds with a range of operatic songs. Father
Christmas also dropped in during the afternoon, along with Orchard
FM's 'Thunder Truck', Burnham's Light Of Elizabeth hovercraft,
and the town's fire crew.
Chamber
of Trade Chairman Alex Turco told Burnham-On-Sea.com he was delighted
with how the event had gone.
"It
was a very successful day - it was great to see the High Street
buzzing and full of so many people getting into the Christmas
spirit," he said.
"The
lights display this year is fantastic and I thank everyone who's
made it possible, especially Buncombes Electicals and Mike Ham."
BBC
presenter Clinton Rogers told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "I am delighted
and honoured to have been asked to turn on Burnham's lights. I
have four children who spent many wonderful days here on the beach,
so Burnham is a special place for me."
"It's
great to see so much effort being put into the switch-on here
in Burnham and to see it so well supported."
A man was rushed to hospital during the afternoon after suffering
a suspected heart attack. Burnham fire crewmembers who were taking
part in the lights switch-on dashed along the High Street to help
the middle-aged man in Adam Street before paramedics arrived a
few minutes later in an ambulance.
