Burnbridge Wanderers Junior Football Club has this week expressed its “disappointment” at Sedgemoor planners’ decision to turn down its bid to convert a field on the outskirts of Burnham-On-Sea into several new football pitches.

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported last week how the club’s plans to convert agricultural land opposite Middle Burnham Cottage in Stoddens Lane had been turned down.

A statement issued by Daren Rogers, Treasurer and Assistant Secretary of the club, stated on Monday (August 20th): “The club is very disappointed about the refusal of planning permission for the new ground in Stoddens Lane. We are currently taking advice on whether to submit an appeal against the committee’s decision.”

“Although the Development Control Committee refused our application they have agreed with our aims to get the Club its own ground and have instructed Council Officers to assist us in achieving this.”

“Duncan McGinty, leader of Sedgemoor District Council, indicated last week the need for five junior football pitches, one cricket pitch and three MUGA for the Burnham Coastal area, our hope is that these commitments are not hollow promises.”

“Despite the refusal, the club will still be able to fulfil all its League and friendly match commitments, as well as training by continuing its use of the BASC Ground and West Huntspill for the forthcoming season.”

“Burnbridge Wanderers Chairman and Committee would like to thank Burnham Without Parish Council, Local Town Councillors, parents, players and all the members of the public who supported our application and look forward to continued support in achieving our goal.”

The application involved the formation of several new football pitches, access and car parking, plus the siting of a portacabin for changing rooms. The proposals were considered by Sedgemoor District Council’s development control committee on August 14th and were rejected, despite a petition being signed by 400 people in favour of the scheme and having the backing of Burnham Without Parish Council.
