Burnham-On-Sea
graveyard safety checks to start in early 2008
The
safety of memorial stones and graves in churchyards across Burnham-On-Sea
is to be tested as part of a major safety project starting in
the new year.
Sedgemoor
District Council is to carry out the programme of memorial testing
and repair in closed churchyards and cemeteries.
Council
spokeswoman Claire Faun said on Friday (December 21st): "The
work is necessary to ensure the safety of those visiting or working
in Sedgemoors graveyards."
"Each
headstone will be tested for stability and safety and if any stone
is found to be potentially unsafe, family members will be contacted
so that they can decide how to make it safe."
The
project will start in January 2008 and finish in March 2009. Local
graveyards to be tested include St Mary's in East Brent; St Mary's
in Berrow; St Andrews in Burnham (pictured) and the Church of
the Holy Cross in Mark.
The
cost of the project has not been disclosed by Sedgemoor District
Council.
