Mean thieves fail to halt Burnham-On-Sea Half Marathon

Thieves who stole dozens of marker signs along the route of Burnham-On-Sea's Half Marathon failed to halt the event on Sunday morning (October 7th).

Angry organisers hit out after thieves stole 30 of the signs overnight but the event still started on schedule, as pictured above.

Organiser Brian Beale told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "Over 30 of our marker signs displaying the mile positions and location of water stops were stolen overnight all along the route. It's galling for this to happen when we'd spent so much time organising the event and had everything ready."

"No mile markers were in place at this year's event, which left us with safety issues, but we'll not let mindless people stop the event. We won't be beaten."

The race itself was won by local man Kevin Cremol from Burnham Harriers in a time of 1 hour, 14 minutes and 16 seconds.

"I'm delighted," he told Burnham-On-Sea.com. "I ran this race two years ago and came second, so to go one place better feels great."

Kevin is pictured here in the centre with second-placed Jon Gilling of Wells City Harriers (left) and Allan Jones of the Royal Navy. It was John's first time running the Burnham Half Marathon and he said Burnham "a great course."

Team mate Jenny Moore (pictured right), from Wells City Harriers, was the first lady home in a time of 1 hour, 24 minutes and 25 seconds.

The Burnham-On-Sea Half Marathon returned in 2005 after a 12 year absence and started from the BASC ground.

The runners then pace along Love Lane and Queens Drive, before turning left along the A38 towards Brent Knoll and then on to East Brent, Lympsham, Wick Road and Red Road, before returning to Burnham via Berrow Road.

A one-mile children's race was also held on Sunday morning, along with a special Breast Cancer Awareness walk.
