Norovirus bug confirmed
as source of Burnham hospital sickness
Health
bosses confirmed on Monday afternoon (December 17th) that the
Norovirus bug is to blame for an outbreak of sickness which has
shut a ward at Burnham-On-Sea
War Memorial Hospital.
Burnham-On-Sea.com
reported last Friday
how the main ward had been closed after five patients showed symptoms
of the Norovirus bug, which causes sicknesss and diarrhoea.
Somerset
Primary Care Trust spokesman Paul Courtney told Burnham-On-Sea.com
on Monday afternoon: "Norovirus has today been confirmed
at the hospital, but since last week just two further patients
have showed signs of sickness."
"There
are now 20 patients on the ward and two have been discharged.
We're monitoring the situation on a day-to-day basis and are not
taking in new patients until the gastric illness has gone."
He
added that the hospital's outpatient services and minor injuries
unit were still unaffected.
"It
should be noted that Norovirus is a relatively common gastric
illness - not a hospital bug - that is found in schools, hotels
and other community places," added Mr Courtney.
