600
sign petition to save Burnham-On-Sea job centre
More
than 600 residents have now signed a petition to save Burnham-On-Sea's
closure-threatened job centre.
Local
councillors launched the campaign
earlier this month (pictured) after Burnham-On-Sea.com was first
to report the Jobcentre
Plus office in the High Street is under threat as part of a cost-cutting
exercise.
While
the Department of Work and Pensions claims no jobs at the centre
are at risk because staff would be redeployed to centres in Bridgwater
and Weston, it has admitted that a "financial review of services"
at the centre is underway to ensure "taxpayers get the best
value for money."
Town
and district councillor Joe Leach, who is overseeing the petition,
told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: "We have had an excellent
response to the petition. There are lots of strong feelings about
this issue."
