Shelters
at Burnham-On-Sea's
Marine
Cove Gardens hit by vandals

Burnham-On-Sea's
Marine Cove gardens were partially closed on Thursday afternoon
(August 30th) after vandals attacked shelters at the site.
Sedgemoor
District Council played down reports that the site is 'completely
closed', saying that the damage is restricted to the shelters,
which have been cordoned off - as pictured here.
Spokesman
Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "The shelters at Marine
Cove Gardens have been fenced off as an interim measure after
a spate of vandalism, but the gardens themselves remain open."
"The
shelters have been fenced of around their entire parameter from
today using chain-link fencing to prevent access by the general
public and reduce the risk of injury."
It's
not the first time the gardens have been tageted by vandals. We
reported
in June 2006 how paving stones had been damaged in a night-time
attack.
Ms
Faun added that this latest vandalism will be properly assessed
and a report will be put to the district council's executive committee
with various options for the short-term.
"In
the long term, Marine Cove Gardens are the subject of a consultation
with the hope of making an application to Heritage Lottery Fund
to the Parks for People scheme."
Burnham-On-Sea.com
reported last
month that residents are being asked for their opinions on
the future of the gardens ahead of a bid for lottery funding.
Community
groups, schools and users of the gardens will also be asked for
their views about future development of the facility.
