260 Burnham
residents
sign petition calling for road safey improvements

Hundreds of concerned Burnham-On-Sea
residents
have signed a petition demanding that safety measures be introduced
along a dangerous road in the town.
Recently-elected
councillor Joe Leach has launched a campaign to get a speed camera
and pedestrian crossing introduced along Marine Drive.
In
just one week, he has already collected over 260 signatures from
local residents, including those pictured here.
"There
are currently 266 names on the petition and I am aiming for 1,000.
So far, every person I have met has been very
happy
to sign it," he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
"There
is a tremendous amount of support for this idea because people
are so fed up with lunatics ruling our roads."
"At
night, people from Marine Drive and the surrounding area literally
risk their lives crossing the road to take their dogs for a walk."
"I
don't care what the County Council has said in the past about
this road not having enough accidents or fatalities to warrant
safety improvements, I won't settle until they have listened to
our ideas."
"Why
should we wait until people have been killed? We know there is
an accident waiting to happen here."
Cllr
Leach says that once
the petition is complete, it will be sent to Somerset County Council
to show the amount of public support there is for changes.
"I
understand there are other areas that also have serious speeding
problems, but I am dealing with this road in my ward first - just
as I promised during my election campaign," he said.
"I
will be out everyday during my spare time to get this petition
finished and will then report back to full council before presenting
it to County Hall."
Marine
Drive has been the scene of several accidents in recent years.
